One of the most southerly Scottish islands, Arran is located in the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre. It’s 19 miles long by 10 miles wide, and has a diverse array of habitats and seascapes. The interior is mountainous and jagged towards the northern end of the island, and full of woodlands and rolling hills to the south. Arran offers amazing days out and about, wandering around sea lochs, visiting the castle on the spit at Lochranza, or seal spotting in the bays.
Whether you’re looking to get away from it all or have an action-packed break, there is something here for everyone. At the most northerly point of the island are the ruins of Lochranza Castle. Once thought to be a 16th century country house, recent excavations have confirmed it to be a rare example of a 1200-1330s hall-house. It enjoys a remote spot along a spit of land with grand views across the loch.
